Rex Richardson

If you’ve ever listened to the trumpet as an instrument then you’ll appreciate it’s bright call amongst instruments; whether it is sat within the echelons of an orchestra or standing out from the crowd in a jazz quintet. Rex Richardson is a name that has become synonymous with trumpet playing the world over. Rex Richardson who comes from Richmond, Virginia where he currently sits as Professor of Trumpet and Jazz Trumpet at the Commonwealth University has been both musically prolific and world travelled for the past fifteen years. In recent times he has focused more as a jazz and classical soloist and has featured with many renowned musical groups; too many to mention here. The Yamaha Performing Artist who has featured in both classical and jazz contexts in many countries is looking forward to playing in Sweden, Australia, South America and Asia in the coming year.

Before he heads off to these places however, he is in Wellington, New Zealand for a busy itinerary which includes masterclasses at the NZ School of Music, and a number of Recitals culminating in a concert on Wednesday, 14th July 2010 in the evening, at St Andrews on the Terrace. This concert which will involve the NZ School of Music Brass Ensemble – 16 of this countries brightest brass students together in concert and Pelorus Brass Band who have been busy in their own right with recent contesting down in Dunedin.

Highlights for the concert are as follows:-

- Bullet Train by Allen Vizzutti
- Mambo Caliente by Arturo Sandoval
- Apophenia by Peter Meechen fo Bb Trumpet, Flugel Horn and Piccolo Trumpet.

Rex Richardson is proudly brought to the Wellington public with the assistance of Ssschmute, Music Works, Yamaha and Rata Records without whom none of this would have been possible.

Turning over a new leaf!

Monday, September 8th, 2008

Ok so it was the Brass Band Regionals this weekend just gone, and our first attempt at Section 1 (A Grade) in a while, we went and did better than I was anticipating I must admit, although personally had one or two silly mistake not been made (I hold my own hand up here) we could have walked away with more than just a little bit of silver-ware, we won the Hymn/Religious Item, which was a given since I think we had that nailed the week before. We also scored some good points in the marching surprisingly! Oh and the Entertainment Contest we had the best presentation, so good stuff really.

On a slightly more negative note, I drank waaaaaaaay too much alcohol; and made myself rather ill. Consider that lesson number 3,456 learned (and counting) – whilst I am not becoming T-Total in a hurry; I will be seriously curtailing my consumtion of such things for a good while.

Today marked for me the start of a new regime, given that here in NZ it is now officially Spring; I went for a brisk walk and ate salad for lunch. I figure Mon,Wed,Fri,Sun will be my ‘sin-free’ days where I will exercise and eat healthily, if I feel weakened by the pull of all things naughty I will only cave in if it’s a Tues,Thurs, or Saturday – I think this will strike the right balance.

I’m not starting a fad diet or anything, simply changing my life-style as a pre-emptive move to upping my quality of life – words being scrubbed from my vocabulary today are, can’t and won’t and impossible and chocolate…hmmmm maybe not chocolate….not just yet…. You walk before you run right?

Oh The FAME!!?!
