Rex Richardson

If you’ve ever listened to the trumpet as an instrument then you’ll appreciate it’s bright call amongst instruments; whether it is sat within the echelons of an orchestra or standing out from the crowd in a jazz quintet. Rex Richardson is a name that has become synonymous with trumpet playing the world over. Rex Richardson who comes from Richmond, Virginia where he currently sits as Professor of Trumpet and Jazz Trumpet at the Commonwealth University has been both musically prolific and world travelled for the past fifteen years. In recent times he has focused more as a jazz and classical soloist and has featured with many renowned musical groups; too many to mention here. The Yamaha Performing Artist who has featured in both classical and jazz contexts in many countries is looking forward to playing in Sweden, Australia, South America and Asia in the coming year.

Before he heads off to these places however, he is in Wellington, New Zealand for a busy itinerary which includes masterclasses at the NZ School of Music, and a number of Recitals culminating in a concert on Wednesday, 14th July 2010 in the evening, at St Andrews on the Terrace. This concert which will involve the NZ School of Music Brass Ensemble – 16 of this countries brightest brass students together in concert and Pelorus Brass Band who have been busy in their own right with recent contesting down in Dunedin.

Highlights for the concert are as follows:-

- Bullet Train by Allen Vizzutti
- Mambo Caliente by Arturo Sandoval
- Apophenia by Peter Meechen fo Bb Trumpet, Flugel Horn and Piccolo Trumpet.

Rex Richardson is proudly brought to the Wellington public with the assistance of Ssschmute, Music Works, Yamaha and Rata Records without whom none of this would have been possible.

So I’ve been out watching the ballet yet again!! It’s beginning to grow on me, I never realised how much fun it could be, and the atmosphere tonight was awesome! Particularly watching the aged yet energetic Sir Jon Trimmer, who’s been at this lark for over 50 years!!

I’ll remember this ballet for a good while, it even had a good few laugh out loud moments through the three acts; Gary Harris’ take on this piece is a refreshing departure from the original Russian Ballet interpretation and if I could afford it, I’d go and watch it again tomorrow!

Anyways…I’m tired now and in need of sleep so I am off to bed now, enough culture for one evening eh?

So I had my cake, and ate it!

I’ve just got back from the Fowler Centre, this evening where I was delighted to watch Christian Lindberg playing with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and hopefully the Principle Trombone player (Dave Bremner) was pleasantly surprised to see me there too! Since he conducts our Brass Band!! An emotional evening and a musically rich one too!

The first half consisted of Rachmaninov’s The Rock (Opus 7) and certainly set the scene for an awesome program; this was followed by Lindberg playing and conducting the Wagenseil Trombone Conerto a very barocian flavoured interlude indeed! This is topped off with Linbergs own composition “Helikon Wasp” which is classical and contemporary and modern at the same time, and certainly an extremly fun piece to listen too, with a certain poetry in a league of it’s own! Not as good as his Motorcycle Odessy some might say; but I liked it – so that’s all that matters

Then there was the interval, where ‘Rachael’ saunters down the aisle (she’s a fellow brass bandy) and I’m like ‘arn’t you supposed to be at work??’ some people want their cake AND eat it I guess; so as not to be the hippocrit I make nothing of it ;p and enjoy the rest of the program in her company :)

The second half is Tchaikovsky beginning with Le Voyevoda Symphonic Ballad (Opus 78) which has all the Tchaikovsky hallmarks, and stirred my emotional centre nicely. Then the program finished with the Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture which some may find corny; but for me it is a very personal and emotion piece – and it almost brought me to tears. Whether or not it was the accoustic in the hall; which is fantastic by the way, or the memory attached to the music which is buried deep down inside, I cannot decide. Or maybe I can and I just can’t share it here; since it is so personal to me?

Anyway, when Christian Lindberg wasn’t conducting, Hannu Lintu WAS!! and boy can he conduct! Or should I say dance with the way he wielded the baton; I was mesmerised by his style, it was almost like he was Harry Potter and the baton his wand! simply magical!

I’m off now to chill and remember a few old memories over a glass of wine. I can’t promise I won’t cry tonight – but then it’s a healthy thing so I won’t supress this emotion I am feeling right now. Tonight I remember my first kiss, as if it were yesterday. Nuff said.

Oh The FAME!!?!

Final Band Concert.

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

It’s all done and dusted for now, we’ve finished our concert; and whilst I remain hopeful that we will do well, we still have a LOT of work to do! Apparently if you have a broadband connection, and you feel like staying up wierd hours (depending on your time zone) you can even ‘watch’ us playing in the contest on Friday, Saturday and in the Band of the Year Contest on Sunday ‘LIVE’ streamed over the internet…. no pressure then eh?

The link is here >> Hi there I’m a LINK!!? you’ll probably need to register or something to get started, but then you’ll be able to see what all the fuss is about!

…me? I’ve never been so nervous in my entire life. Not because of the band contest(s) but because I have FOOLISHLY agreed to give ice-skating a try for the first time in my life, whilst there, be afraid be very, VERY afraid!

How was your weekend?

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

Well…I’ve found something new to occupy my time – and it may well turn into another hobby (I’ll try not to make it an obsession too soon), Armed with just a Logitech webcam, a Canon EOS Rebel (for stop motion stuff), a green screen (on it’s way), a copy of Microsoft Moviemaker (with a couple of add-ons) and a whole heap of imagination I have entered into the world of film-making and Vlogging…as evidenced by my last post.

So, as you can imagine – I have been playing around with editing and perfecting my greenscreen approach all weekend in between band rehersal, brass lesson and getting my haircut!

My latest entry into the ‘Youtube’ verse is something called an AMV – Anime Music Video; the idea being you take an anime film (I chose Final Fantasy the Spirit Within) and you use footage edited against your chosen favourite track (I chose ‘Hide and Seek’ by Imogen Heap) I chose these two because they seemed a good match but you can be the judge…my thanks go to the original artists without whom this sort of thing would have been impossible.

If you feel the need to comment you can either comment here, or on my Youtube page :)

But not in an Adams Family way…

So we have reached the midway marker of yet another week, I’m still at work, and will be heading up Ngiao again tonight for band practise; and maybe a bit more recording =p I heard a sneak preview of one of our pieces the other day and hardly recognised it, sounded like some other ‘A’ grade band?! It was awesome in other words, and I now can’t wait to have my own copy of the finished CD….is that vain? meh what the heck!! I don’t care!

I’m currently doing a little reading up on chroma-keying and such for my first attempt at ‘film-making-on-a-budget’ I am currently looking at getting some cheap matt panels (green) for the background, and I am looking at getting some reasonably soft lighting for them to reduce the chance of reflections and bleeding etc…add some Povray Ray-Tracing, a little imagination and about 3 months to compile the ray-tracing to broadcast quality~!! Then I think I will be ready…

Well I wanna make a bit of an impression?! Oh and in other news I have rediscovered the wonderful and sexy Imogen Heap; downloaded one of her albums and just can’t stop listening to it, to describe the style it’s a bit like Enya but far more original in my humble opinion and diverse for that matter! Anyways – I want her to have my babies!!! =p

In other news? It’s the Queens birthday on Monday which is awesome for me in NZ – coz it means I get a day off work (it’s a public holiday here), makes me question why it ain’t a public holiday in the UK, like we don’t have enough of them there already!!? Anyhoo – have a good’un and I’ll blog ya later….

The Recording has started!

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

I’m back home after spending the whole morning, recording with the band, doing multiple ‘takes’ and pieces etc… it was an eye opener for sure! I’ve never seen so many microphones, bits of cable and bits of foam!!

I can’t wait to hear the finished article, but we have a lot more work to do. We’ll be recording at our re-hearsals over the next few weeks until we have enough material. Then it’s press time! Hehe…never thought I’d see the day where I end up on a CD!

So, let’s recap? Ambitions achieved and things I’ve done…hmmm….

Well, I guess most memeorable moments for me, are when I was in the Cheshire County Youth Brass Band, and also the County Youth Choir; with the band I’ve had the honour of accompanying the Celloist Steven Isserlis, and also Peter Skellern. With the choir I have taken part of Jean-Michelle-Jarre’s ‘Chronologie’ tour back in 1992 and also worked with Barry Manilowe at the Apollo Theatre in Manchester.

I’ve boogied with some of the cast from Hollyoaks and Coronation Street at an after show party following the opening night of ‘Oh What a Night’ in Manchester (my Uncle Chris is the author) – go Chris!!

Then things go a little quiet as I try to become professional, i.e. I work loads to pay the mortgage, then more recently I commission a march to be written for Frodsham Silver Band with my dad’s help. It was presetned to them in time for the Centenary Year, it’s called “Sandstone Centenial”

Then shortly after that I move to New Zealand from the UK. Start a new life, and start playing with a new band, Pelorus Trust Wellington Brass Band, and went with them to Australia this Easter just gone, to win the B Grade Nationals…..and now we are working on a CD!

In amongst all of that I have written a lot of poetry between 1999 and 2004 and have been published in over 12 anthologies in that time; not to mention being nominated for Amateur International Poet of the Year two years running, in fact in 2003 I made it to the semi-finals.

So…..what’s left to do? I guess I could pull my finger out and finished working on a Novel I’ve been writing on and off since I was at university; working title – “The Chronicles of the Son”…I’ve still got time :) The great JRR Tolkien took years to write his masterpieces; so I ain’t gonna rush mine, as I want a masterpiece too…I’m still not sure whether it’ll be publish worthy, but it’ll be read to my little munchkins one day, when I have a family.

I guess you could say, I’m one of those ‘almost’ famous people. I’ve tried stuff, but never quite been in the right place or the right time, to make it to the BIG TIME! and to be frank – thank goodness! Else I might not have experienced the wonderful things I have in my life so far.

We all make choices in the paths we take through life, sometimes at the expence of many an opportunity; the important thing I reckon and is kinda the moral to this post, is to choose without regret. That’s a foothold into yesterday, that slows your progress into tomorrow.
